The Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture (FBA) educates students with the aim of promoting sustainable and innovative development to meet global challenges in food production, climate and the environment. The faculty is an international arena for education, research and knowledge dissemination, with employees and students from 25 different countries. The faculty offers a PhD in Aquatic Biosciences. The FBA has 900 students and 160 employees in Bodø and Steinkjer. The professional community is organised into the following five divisions: Aquaculture, Ecology, Genomics, Algae and microbial biotechnology, and Animal Science, Production and Welfare.

About the position
The Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture (FBA; Campus Bodø), Nord University, Norway, invites applications for two permanent positions (100%) as Professor/Associate Professor in the field of Aquaculture. The Aquaculture Research Group mainly conducts studies on fish feed, nutrition, welfare, health and seafood quality and reproduction. The positions are at the campus in Bodø, but candidates may have duties at other Nord University campuses.

The university is primarily seeking two candidates with extensive knowledge of fish nutrition/fish feed and fish health.Potential candidates should also have in-depth knowledge of fish pathogens and disease issues in the Norwegian aquaculture industry. The university also invites applications from candidates with a strong background in fish biology, water quality, production technology and optimization of aquaculture production. Successful candidates should have a doctoral degree in one of the above-mentioned fields. Candidates must have good knowledge of the Norwegian aquaculture industry and have extensive experience of conducting research within the relevant themes.

Appointees are expected to teach and supervise bachelor, master and PhD students in both Norwegian and English. In addition, the successful candidates should be willing to teach on the FBA’s continuing educational programmes, which are offered to the Norwegian aquaculture industry. Successful candidates are expected to provide research-based education and use student-active forms of learning. Successful candidates should willingly contribute to the consistent improvement of the faculty’s study programmes in aquaculture. Candidates should also perform administrative tasks associated with teaching, research and dissemination.

The appointed candidates should maintain high professional standards in their research at national and international levels. Successful candidates should initiate and develop interdisciplinary research projects and academic environments in collaboration with their colleagues at the faculty. They should actively seek grants from national and international funding agencies in order to develop up the research portfolio at FBA and should actively collaborate with both the aquaculture industry and national and international research institutes. Usually, around 45% of the time is allocated to research. Administrative duties are also part of the job.

Qualification requirements
For the appointment as Professor, candidates should have a doctoral degree in the relevant field and extensive knowledge and experience in teaching and supervising, an excellent track record in research grant procurement, a strong record of publication and dissemination, a dynamic national and international research network and experience of academic leadership. For the appointment as Associate Professor, candidates should have a Norwegian doctoral degree in the relevant field and experience of teaching and research in the field as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications. Documented educational competence is required and applicants should have experience of supervising at least at two cycles of education. Experience of national/international grant procurement will be advantageous for applicants. If the candidate has a foreign degree, it must be approved as being equivalent to a Norwegian doctoral degree.

An associate professor must have formal pedagogical competence and relevant teaching experience. New supplementary provisions on professional education competence came into force on 1 September 2019. Applicants who cannot document such competence are requested to achieve this within the first two years of employment by enrolling in such training offered by Nord University.

The two positions require good oral and written communication skills in both English and Norwegian (or possibly another Scandinavian language). For applicants who are not proficient in any Scandinavian language, oral and written language skills must be documented. The two jobs require highly motivated candidates with good interpersonal skills.

Candidates are expected to contribute to the future development of the faculty by stimulating collaboration among different research groups at the faculty, as well as in collaboration with external partners. Qualified applicants will be ranked according to the following criteria:

  • Experience of research and teaching and supervision at bachelor, master and PhD levels
  • Experience of research and development in sustainable aquaculture production
  • Publication record, particularly over the last five years; the quality of publications will be evaluated based on the principles of
  • the “San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA)”, in which quality and relevance instead of journal impact is emphasised
  • Success in research funding procurement at national and international levels
  • National and international research networks and industry collaboration
  • Good oral and written communication skills in both Norwegian and English
